Sustainability is integral to the Tata Group’s philosophy, which has been translated into action through our Sustainability Policy and strengthens our commitment to a holistic triple-bottom business approach.

Development of sustainable mobility solutions is at the core of our sustainability strategy. Tata Motors is leading this mobility transformation by providing the most extensive range of cutting-edge commercial and passenger vehicles that offers safe and sustainable mobility solutions. The company is committed to the Government’s vision for electric vehicles and is working in a collaborative manner to facilitate faster adoption of electric vehicles – to build a sustainable future for India. We delivered the first set of Tigor Electric Vehicles (EVs) to Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) and we also supplied the Tata Starbus Hybrid Electric Bus (12m bus that incorporates a diesel series hybrid configuration aiming to reduce carbon dioxide emissions) to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) in 2017-18 and since then our momentum in the EV space continues.

Environment protection features as a top priority to our business and we have set the action plans for carbon emission control, energy conservation, water conservation, and waste management. Tata Motors is a signatory to RE100 and aspires to source 100 percent renewable electricity by 2030. We have increased the share of renewable energy to over 20 percent in the last three years. We are working on a theme of ‘Value from Waste’ across our manufacturing plants in India and exploring innovative solutions for minimisation of waste at the source itself. During 2017-18, we invested over Rs 30 crore towards environmental protection.

We have also implemented the principles of circular economy through our Tata ProLife business wherein we re-manufacture auto components at the end of their useful life. In 2017-18, an equivalent of 26,993 vehicles have been reused or recycled under our take-back programme, thus generating revenue of Rs 215 crore. In terms of energy consumption, ProLife business has utilized 50 kWh electrical energy per equivalent engine for remanufacturing, a reduction of 33 percent fromr 2011 levels.

We are determined towards ensuring safe, clean and healthy working conditions to our employees, business associates and all those working on our behalf. As a result of safety improvements, the LTIFR – Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (the number of lost time injuries occurring in a workplace per one million hours worked) – rate improved by 38 percent during 2017-18. We believe that our responsibility extends beyond our own fences and we work to ensure protection of human rights in the value chain. We are committed to the cause of community development and our approach towards corporate citizenship is independent of the P&L statement.

In view of minimising the ecological and social impacts of our supply chain, we have taken up the Sustainable Supply Chain Initiative. We have shortlisted critical suppliers and initiated sensitisation on Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) aspects through formulation of guidelines, workshops and on-site sustainability assessment of suppliers. We expanded our supplier outreach to over 200 suppliers over the last three years. Taking a step further, we have also started engaging with dealers and covered 239 channel partners as a part of the sensitisation workshops on sustainability.

We also participated in the road-testing exercise of product sustainability information guidelines of the United Nations Environment (UNE) to improve the credibility of product sustainability claims.
